CfP Irish literature and periodical culture – Leuven 1-3 December 2022

Periodicals have played an important role in the production, mediation, dissemination and reception of Irish literature. By exploring the intersections between Irish writers and the (transnational) periodical press, this conference aims to further scrutinise the ways in which periodical culture in Ireland has impacted writers’ careers, codified the development of literary genres and conventions, and influenced the course of Irish literary history and the canon more generally.

Ethel Colburn Mayne: Selected Stories, edited by Elke D’hoker

This new book contains a selection of the short stories of the Irish writer, Ethel Colburn Mayne, who published her first stories in The Yellow Book but later also contributed to modernist magazines and was routinely compared to Katherine Mansfield. Her work has been wrongly sidelined and really deserves to be more widely read. Copies can be ordered here.

The Modern Short Story and Magazine Culture, 1880-1950, edited by Elke D’hoker and Chris Mourant

This collection of original essays highlights the intertwined fates of the modern short story and periodical culture in the period 1880–1950, the heyday of magazine short fiction in Britain. Through case studies that focus on particular magazines, short stories and authors, chapters investigate the presence, status and functioning of short stories within a variety of periodical publications – highbrow and popular, mainstream and specialised, middlebrow and avant-garde. Examining the impact of social and publishing networks on the production, dissemination and reception of short stories, it foregrounds the ways in which magazines and periodicals shaped conversations about the short story form and prompted or provoked writers into developing the genre.

Cfp: More than meets the ear: sound & short fiction – University of Vienna, 19th-21st September 2019 – EXTENDED DEADLINE: 15 June

CFP: Conference The American Short Story: New Considerations – New Orleans – 5-7 Sept 2019

The Society for the Study of the American Short Story (SSASS) requests proposals for papers and presentations at an international symposium to be held in New Orleans, September 5-7, 2019, at the Hotel Monteleone. This venue has been enormously popular with ALA members in part because this outstanding hotel is located in the heart of the French Quarter and virtually all of the literary locations in the city are within walking distance. Double rooms are $175 at the conference rate.

Borders, Intersections and Identity in the Contemporary Short Story in English is a conference organised by the Research Project Intersections: Gender and Identity in the Short Fiction of Contemporary British Women Writers (FEDER/AEI – FEM2017-83084-P) and the Research Group Discourse and Identity (GRC2015/002, GI_1924) in affiliation with the ENSFR (European Network for Short Fiction Research). The conference is to be held at the Faculty of Philology, University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, on 23 and 24 May, 2019.
