Edge Hill Prize Shortlist Announced

The shortlisted titles for the Edge Hill Prize 2024 for a published collection from Britain and Ireland are as follows:

Forgetting is How we Survive by David Frankel (Salt)

After the Funeral by Tessa Hadley (Jonathan Cape)

Encounters with Everyday Madness by Charlie Hill (Roman Books)

Monstrous Longing by Abi Hynes (Dahlia Publishing)

Parables, Fables, Nightmares by Malachi McIntosh (The Emma Press)

Walter Benjamin Stares at the Sea by CD Rose (Melville House Publishing)

A new £1,000 Debut Collection Award will also be presented to one of the shortlisted authors to celebrate the best new voices in short story writing, and a £500 prize will be awarded for the best entry from an Edge Hill University postgraduate creative writing student.

The winner will be announced in February 2025 at an award ceremony in London. More details of judges and news about the prize are on its website.

Short Fiction in Theory and Practice 9.1

Latest issue of Short Fiction in Theory and Practice out now, with articles on Alice Munro, and Elizabeth Strout and new collaborative fiction from Rupert Loydell and Amy Lilwall. There is also an interview with Tessa Hadley and a review of new books on editing. Graham Mort’s story, ‘Emporium’ explores the short story as ‘humble’ fiction from a practice-based perspective, introducing the topic ahead of the forthcoming ENSFR conference on this topic.

Edge Hill Prize 2018

The winner of the £10,000 Edge Hill Prize for a published short story collection will be announced at an award ceremony in London on Saturday November 3rd. The shortlisted authors are Tessa Hadley, Sarah Hall, Alison MacLeod, Tom Rachman and Leone Ross. There will be readings from all five collections: book your tickets at Waterstones Bookshop, Piccadilly.

About ENSFR

The European Network for Short Fiction Research was created as a joint initiative of researchers at Edge Hill University (U.K.), the Université d’Angers (France) and the University of Leuven (Belgium). We have now been joined by many other colleagues from all over Europe. Our broad aim is to foster and promote research on short fiction across different countries and institutions.

We aim to provide a forum and resources for European-based researchers into the practice, criticism and transmission of short fiction in its diversity of forms and to facilitate collaboration in both critical and practice-led research. We hold annual conferences on short fiction, hosted in different universities across Europe, and we facilitate and support many other conferences, workshops and seminars in the broad field of short fiction studies.
