DESCRIPTION:Join artist and educator Sahra Hersi for a free CPD (continuing professional development) session. \nConnected to our Reimagine project\, a creative learning programme developed with Year 9 students from Priory School in Lewes\, this session is open to all educators and practitioners interested in creative learning\, including teachers\, youth workers\, social workers\, artists and home educators. \nSahra will share an insight into her practice\, which uses stories\, motifs and symbols as tools for collective making. Her work begins with conversations and time spent with people and places\, translating individual ideas and experiences into shared artworks. \nSahra will lead a practical collage activity exploring the idea of an animal as a personal symbol or ‘familiar’\, representing companionship\, protection or something more personal. Using a limited palette of coloured paper\, participants will create individual animal motifs before bringing them together as one collective tile panel. DESCRIPTION:The Classics Book Club meets on the first Thursday of each month here at Hatchards\, Piccadilly. This book club will instead take place one week ahead of schedule\, on Thursday\, 29th October. \nThis month’s book is: “Japanese Ghost Stories” by Lafcadio Hearn. \nThe dead wreak revenge on the living\, paintings come alive\, spectral brides possess mortal men and a priest devours human flesh in these chilling Japanese ghost stories retold by a master of the supernatural. \nLafcadio Hearn drew on the phantoms and ghouls of traditional Japanese folklore – including the headless ‘rokuro-kubi’\, the monstrous goblins ‘jikininki’ or the faceless ‘mujina’ who stalk lonely neighbourhoods – and infused them with his own memories of his haunted childhood in nineteenth-century Ireland to create these terrifying tales of striking and eerie power. Today they are regarded in Japan as classics in their own right. \nTickets include £3 off the purchase of next month’s Book Club book. \n

DESCRIPTION:Special Issue | Writing Across Languages: Anglophone Short Stories by Multilingual Authors \nGuest edited by Elsa Court (University of Oxford)\, Nina Ellis (The American University in Cairo)\, and Sonya Moor (Manchester Metropolitan University). \nIn ‘Hills Like White Elephants’ Ernest Hemingway uses a Spanish expression to insinuate the linguistic reality of a geographic location that is experienced only in passing. ‘Dos cervezas\,’ says one of his two central characters\, a man introduced as ‘the American\,’ whom we understand is in a precarious relationship with a younger woman\, also a native English speaker. For the duration of the five-page story\, the couple sit at a table in the shade of a café while waiting for a train to Madrid\, discussing the future of their relationship in coded terms. They continue ordering drinks presumably still in Spanish — but after the mention of ‘Dos cervezas’\, this second language is presumed\, rather than transcribed. The rest of the story — including further exchanges with the bar owner — is written entirely in English. \nThe literary fiction landscape has dramatically changed since the time when\, as Hilary Mantel put it\, a young writer was systematically advised to avoid using foreign language expressions in her prose\, for fear of sounding ‘elitist’ to the Anglo-American reader. Moreover\, the globalisation of Anglophone creative expression means that not all fiction written in English today is produced from imaginations that think only — or even primarily — in English\, even when that is the primary language of their texts. \nInternational\, peer-reviewed Short Fiction in Theory and Practice (Intellect Books) is proud to invite original short-story submissions for a practice-based special issue to be published in September 2027\, entitled ‘Writing Across Languages: Anglophone Short Stories by Multilingual Authors’.
